Old North State Medical Society

133rd Annual Meeting: Lift Every Voice ... For Health Equity

GREENSBORO — The Old North State Medical Society (ONSMS) is one of the oldest medical societies for African American Physicians in the United States. Each year, the society hosts a Fall Scientific Meeting where healthcare professionals can gather and explore pressing issues at the forefront of the industry. This year, in collaboration with Piedmont AHEC, marks the Old North State Medical Society’s 133rd annual conference. This year’s event focused on “Advancing Healthcare Equity and Knowledge” to address disparities in healthcare access and outcomes while sharing the latest advancements in the field.

The 2023 Fall Scientific Meeting aimed to address disparities in healthcare access and outcomes while sharing the latest advancements in the field. The 2-day event brought together physicians, physician assistants, nurses, government officials, community health advocates and community program leaders committed to a health enhancement agenda. This year's program aimed to provide updates regarding significant advances and findings in treating disease and standards of care. Furthermore, to provide models for practice effectiveness and efficiency that ensures adherence to government regulations and positive outcomes for patients.

Ibram X. Kendi, author of five straight #1 New York Times bestsellers, was the keynote speaker for this year’s conference. An American author, professor, and historian of race and discriminatory policy in America, Kendi was included in Time's 100 Most Influential People of 2020. His relentless and passionate research puts into question the notion of a post-racial society and opens readers’ and audiences’ eyes to the reality of racism in America today.

Formed in 1887 to further the interests of African American physicians, the ONSMS continues to support the interests of minority physicians. The society focuses on educating and advocating for the most vulnerable patients and people residing in communities that consistently produce poorer health outcomes. ONSMS works to protect the quality of patient care in all North Carolina communities. The mission of the society is succinctly expressed by the ONSMS’s President, Brian Shackleford, MD, “we will work relentlessly to combat the numerous health inequities found in disparate communities in North Carolina. We are stronger as a sum!”
