Scope

The Greensboro Medical Historical Library collections are comprised of unique primary documents dating from the early 19th Century to the present, such as journals, letters, correspondence, photographs, medical instruments, ledgers, moving images, scrapbooks, and albums.  Materials relate to the history of health and medicine in Greensboro and Guilford County, North Carolina. 

 

Access

The Greensboro Medical Historical Library is open for research in the Medical Library at Moses H. Cone Hospital.  Materials in the GMHL are non-circulating. 

 

Background

The Greensboro Medical Historical Library was established in l984. It is located within the Medical Library at Moses H. Cone Hospital in Greensboro, NC.

The Library was established to ensure the preservation of materials related to the history of health and medicine in Greensboro and Guilford County, North Carolina.  Collections represent materials dating from the early 19th Century to the present and include manuscript materials, photographs, medical instruments, and moving image materials.  The Library was established with the cooperation of E. A. Morris, Dr. William Norment and many other physicians in Greensboro and Guilford County.  The Library became a reality, in large part, because of the vision, dedication, and untiring efforts of Dr. Robert L. Phillips.

Mission

The mission of the Greensboro Medical Historical Library is to serve as a resource for professional organizations, educational programs, researchers, and the general public by identifying, collecting, preserving, and providing access to materials related to health and medicine in Greensboro and Guilford County, North Carolina.
