MCHS Library Pathfinders
The MCHS Medical Library Staff has created lists of reputable resources on various health conditions, diseases, and wellness issues. Most of the resources featured are electronically available online. Topics are:

Gateway
The NLM Gateway presents a single interface that lets users search in multiple retrieval systems. Offers citations, full text, video, audio, and images.

Guilford Health Online
Guilford Health Online is a collaborative effort among various health and information agencies to organize and present a variety of local and global health resources to the citizens of Guilford County.

Healthfinder
Gateway to consumer health information from the United States government and includes links to selected online publications, clearinghouses, databases, web sites, and support and self-help groups, as well as government agencies and not-for-profit organizations that produce reliable information for the public.

Health Source: Consumer Edition *(available from within the Moses Cone Library)
This database provides consumer oriented information on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, child care, sports medicine, and general health. Includes searchable full text for over 150 consumer health journals, abstracts and indexing for nearly 175 general health, nutrition and professional health care publications.

Informed Health Online
Evidence-based information for patients, clinicians and others — summarizes Cochrane systematic reviews.

Lab Tests Online
Up-to-date information on clinical lab tests that include test descriptions, conditions and diseases linked to certain tests, screening guides, news, and in-depth articles.

MEDLINEplus
Links to medical dictionaries, health care directories, diseases, and consumer health databases with many full-text resources.

Merck Manuals
The Merck Manual of Medical Information, Home Edition uses everyday language to present information about diseases, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. Sections of the Home Edition are currently online. The Merck Manual of Geriatrics focuses on the medical problems of the elderly. The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy is available at this site.

UpToDate Patient Information
Content written for patients and family members by physicians who are experts in their field. Articles updated continually based on new medical findings and reviewed by multiple experts for accuracy. UpToDate is also making its physician content available. These professional articles provide a detailed discussion of medical research and current expert recommendations, and contain links to summaries of important medical studies.

WELL-CONNECTED is a library of reports on common diseases and wellness issues. Each report is an in-depth discussion of the latest information on treatments, risk factors, causes, diagnostic tests, and preventative measures. Reviewed links to useful organizations are included in each report. Includes Spanish translations of reports.

Alternative Medicine

Alternative Medicine Homepage
A resource for information on unconventional, unproven, or alternative therapies. Lists studies on the use of alternative therapies. Includes government resources and practitioners’ directories. Provides resources on AIDS and HIV, databases, and mailing lists and newsgroups.

HerbMed
HerbMed® provides hyperlinked access to the scientific data underlying the use of herbs for health. It is an evidence-based information resource for professionals, researchers, and general public.

MedlinePlus: Alternative Medicine
The consumer web site of the National Library of Medicine has put together an easy reference to keep up with the latest research on alternative medicine. There are sections on the latest news, general overviews, clinical trials, research, information on specific conditions, organizations, children's health, and information en Espanol. It also links to related Internet sites and other pages within MEDLINEplus on similar topics.

National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine
NCCAM provides bibliographical citations from reputable medical journals on subjects related to alternative medicine; information for researchers, and general information for consumers on alternative care.
