Document Delivery

Document Delivery involves the provision of copies of articles or of books or audiovisuals.  Each institution has its own policies as noted below.  All offer Loansome Doc document delivery services. 

1.  Loansome Doc.  

Each institution offers Loansome Doc services.  For a full description of this service, please see the National Library of Medicine's Loansome Doc Fact Sheet, or the GAHEC Fact sheet. You must first register with the Library with which you wish to work.  Fees apply for this service.

a.   MCHS/GAHEC Library:  Call for information:  (336) 832-7484.

b.   UNC-Chapel Hill: Please call the Health Sciences Library at UNC-CH at (919) 966-4998. or visit this site.

c.    Duke University:  Please see this site for full information about this process.  For information call the Medical Center Library Interlibrary Loan Service at (919) 660-1179.

d.    Wake Forest:  Registration is required with Wake Forest. Please Click here for full information about this process or call Wake Forest University Medical School Library at (336) 716-4378.

2.  Moses Cone Health System/GAHEC Library - Document Delivery

 a. Residents, Interns, and Medical Students affiliated with the MCHS:

  1. Photocopies of materials in the MCHS collection may be made in the Library
  2. Photocopies of materials not in the MCHS collection may be requested through the Library on Interlibrary Loan. It is suggested that the student consider requesting such materials from his affiliated school; sometimes there is no charge for this service. For specific information about UNC-CH, Wake Forest, Duke, or ECU, please click on the appropriate school.
  3. Books and audiovisuals are available for loan
  4. Personal (medical, nursing, and health care) books may be ordered through the Libraries. These book orders must be arranged at the Library. Prepayment is necessary.

b. Health professional Students on Rotation

  1. Photocopies from materials in the MCHS collection may be made by the student in the Library ($.10/page) or requested on Interlibrary Loan through their campus Library
  2. Photocopies of materials not available in the MCHS Library may be requested through MCHS Interlibrary Loan. Fees apply. It is suggested that the student consider requesting such materials from his affiliated school; sometimes there is no charge for this service.
  3. Borrowing of MCHS materials is not available.

c. Students unaffiliated with MCHS are referred to their own college or university.

  1. Photocopies from materials in the MCHS collection may be made in the Library ($.10/page) or requested on Interlibrary Loan through their campus Library
  2. Borrowing of MCHS materials is not available

3.  UNC-CH - Document Delivery

a.    Document delivery for UNC-CH Division of Health Affairs Students Off-Campus for UNC-CH owned material is available at no charge through the IRIS service.  For logon to, or description and instructions of, this Interlibrary Request Internet Service click here.   A list of Frequently Asked questions are also available.  For registration for first time users, go to http://www.hsl.unc.edu/illiad/firsttime.htm.

c.   Distance Education Students.

1)   For information for students off-campus, please go to the Distance Education Services page.  Borrowing information for distance education students is here.

    2)   Distance Education Students include the following: 
            Students enrolled in a distance education course taught via teleconference or web page
            Students enrolled in a course that meets off campus
            Students temporarily off campus for one of the following:

  Clerkship                          clinical rotation
  externship                        field placement
  clinical preceptorship         electives
  extramural rotation           internships

Electronic Resources

Electronic Resources are online resources provided by the institution, generally only to affiliated users.

1.     AHEC Digital Library

Residents affiliated with the four medical schools in North Carolina are eligible for AHEC Digital Library (ADL) accounts and may access the school's resources through the AHEC Digital Library. All users must be registered with the AHEC Digital Library.

2.      Moses Cone Health System/GAHEC Library – Access to Electronic Resources

a.   All electronic resources available through the Libraries' computer workstations are available during the hours the Library is open.

b.   Literature Searches may be conducted on the Libraries' computer workstations Moses Cone during the hours the Libraries are open. Medline is available through Ovid and PubMed.

c.   Literature searches may be requested from the Librarians. Fees may apply.

3.      UNC-CH - Access to Electronic Resources

a.   UNC-Chapel Hill’s Health Sciences Library offers access to a wide range of electronic resources for Residents in the MCHS / UNC-Chapel Hill program and for their medical and off-campus students.  Residents access these resources through the AHEC Digital Library; for assistance call 832-1299.  Students call  (919) 962-0080 for assistance.

b.   For information for Distance Education Students and students off-campus, please click here.  Distance Education Students include the following:

4.      NW AHEC/Wake Forest University School of Medicine

a.   WF and NWAHEC affiliated off-campus students, distance learners, residents, and interns have access to resources such as Ovid Medline and CINAHL, and MDConsult through Wake Forest via a proxy server.  For information about remote access and the proxy server, please go here.   Residents may access these resources through the AHEC Digital Library.

b.   Reference services and literature searches are available from the Carpenter Library staff. Please call (336) 713-7101.  For more complete information about the services available, please go to the Reference page of the Wake Forest site.

5.       Duke University - Access to Electronic Resources

a.   Some Library resources and services are available through Duke's Medical Center Library web page.

b.   Proxy Server: The proxy server allows access to restricted resources such as online textbooks, journals, and some databases available through the Web from non-Duke locations using a commercial Internet Service Provider. Your browser needs to be configured to route requests through the Duke proxy servers. For assistance with the proxy server, go to the proxy server information page, or call the OIT Help Desk at (919) 684-2200.    

c.   Electronic Collections  This site links to lists of electronic books and journals, many of which require passwords

6.      ECU - Access to Electronic Resources

1. Moses Cone Health System/GAHEC Library

Workshops provided by the MCHS Library are available for Medical students, Residents, Interns, and health professional students on rotation at MCHS.
