LOANSOME DOC

A. LOANSOME DOC is a feature of the National Library of Medicine's PubMed databases. It is designed to enable users to order the full text of documents found while online and searching in this Medline database.

C. You must first become a Registered User by establishing an Agreement with an "Ordering Library" such as UNC-CH, Wake Forest University, or Duke.


1. For steps in selecting an Ordering Library, see
Loansome Doc First Steps. This will give you questions that you will need to consider in selecting an Ordering Library. Each Library has its own document delivery policies and charges. Each library has a unique ordering library identification (Library ID) which Loansome Doc will use to send your requests to your selected library; you will be given this ID by your ordering library when you set up an agreement with them.

2. You should first contact the medical library with which you are currently affiliated. If you have no such affiliation, or if you are in the Greensboro AHEC and are not on the Medical Staff of the Moses Cone Health System, contact the
Greensboro AHEC Library UNC-CH, Wake Forest University, Duke or ECU.

a. UNC-CH

b. Wake Forest Univesity Medical School

D. After establishing an agreement with your "Ordering Library", complete a Loansome Doc Registration.


1. For the registration form, follow the link to Loansome Doc Registration Page from the
Loansome Doc Fact Sheet.
2. You will be asked for the Ordering Library ID. This ID will have been given to you by your Ordering Library when you set up your agreement with them.
3. Be sure to check with your "ordering library" before making selections regarding "For Delivery Information" (whether the documents will be sent by mail, email, fax, Aries, DocView). Some Libraries do not use email or other Internet-delivery systems (such as Ariel or DocView) as standard delivery methods.



E. The process for requesting a Loansome Doc article is included on the Fact Sheet. The basic steps are as follows:


1. Run a literature search using PubMed.
2. Click the box next to articles you want to order
3. Choose Order from the Send To drop down menu box and click on Send To.
4. At the Login box, enter your UserID and password and choose from the drop down menu the action you wish to take.
5. To order a document, choose Order Documents; click GO
6. Review orders and delivery information.
7. Click Send Order button
8. The NLM computer electronically transfers the orders from the Loansome Doc Order File to the user's Ordering Library, using DOCLINE, the online NLM document ordering program.
9. Staff at the Ordering Library are notified of pending Loansome Doc requests when they log on to DOCLINE. The requests are printed, processed, and updated as filled or not filled.

F. Costs
Charges for copies of articles or other services vary with the library. There are no charges for the use of PubMed or for transmitting requests to a library through these databases.
