Sports Medicine Faculty and Staff
Currently we have 11 sports medicine faculty and three sports medicine fellows
at three different outpatient sites: Murphy-Wainer Orthopedics, Guilford Orthopaedic &
Sports Medicine Center,
and the Kernodle Clinic.
Karl B. Fields, MD, ABFP, CAQ Sports Medicine – Fellowship Program Director and
Chief of Family Medicine
Dr. Fields graduated with Distinction from the University of Kentucky School of
Medicine in 1976 and the Charlotte Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Residency
in 1979. After one year as Director of Public Health on the Island of St. Croix,
he entered private practice in rural
North Carolina in 1980. In 1984, he joined the faculty
at Moses H. Cone Family Medicine Residency. In 1985, he completed a Faculty
Development Fellowship at the
University
of North Carolina with an
emphasis on Sports Medicine Research. Dr. Fields is now a Professor of Family
Medicine and Associate Chairman of the Department of Family Medicine at Chapel Hill. He has remained active in teaching medical
students, residents and Sports Medicine students since 1980. He has been a
volunteer Team physician for middle, high school and college teams, and
continues to evaluate elite athletes, particularly runners, triathletes and
tennis players. He was also a volunteer at the Lake Placid Olympic Training
Center in 1985. Dr. Fields is past President of the American Medical Society for
Sports Medicine. He is active with the North Carolina Medical Society's Sports
Medicine Committee, the American
Academy of Family Physicians, Sports
Medicine Review Course and the
American
College of Sports
Medicine. He is an editor with the British Journal of Sports Medicine. He also
coordinates international exchanges with Australia. In addition to sports
medicine, Dr. Fields' other areas of expertise include exercise physiology,
stress testing and orthotic preparation.
Sara Neal, MD, A.B.F.P, CAQ Sports Medicine,
Assistant Director of the Sports Medicine
Fellowship
Dr Neal received her MD from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 1994.
She completed her Family Medicine Residency at Wake Forest
University
Baptist
Medical
Center
in 1997. She joined the faculty of the Department of Family and Community
Medicine at Wake Forest University
in 1997. In 2006, she completed a Primary care Sports Medicine fellowship
at Moses Cone
Hospital system in Greensboro, North Carolina.
She remained on faculty at Wake
Forest, serving as
Assistant Professor and the Associate Director of the Family Medicine Residency
program until 2008, when she joined the faculty at Moses Cone as Assistant
Professor. Dr. Neal has been the team physician for the Wake Forest Women’s
Field Hockey program since 2002 and was elected physician member of the North
Carolina Boxing Advisory Commission in 2008. Her areas of special interest
include women’s health and sports medicine.
Martha Delaney, MA,
Fellowship Coordinator
Ms. Delaney graduated from the University
of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1983 with a B.A. degree in
Sociology and received her Master's degree in Sociology and Research from the
same university in 1989. She joined The
Moses Cone Health System Family Practice Program in 1987.
Ms. Delaney coordinates the Primary Care
Sports Medicine Fellowship as well as facilitating scholarly activities.
Murphy-Wainer Orthopedics
Daniel F. Murphy, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon
Dr. Murphy graduated with honors from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia in 1981 and
was elected AOA. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of North Carolina
in Chapel Hill in 1986 where he trained in
Sports Medicine under the direction of Dr. Timothy Taft working with student
athletes. He has been in private practice in Greensboro since 1986 in orthopedic surgery
with special interest and emphasis in the practice of sports medicine.
Activities involve team physician and surgeon coverage for eleven area high
schools, two area colleges, professional hockey and baseball teams. Teaching
activities cover a wide spectrum including physician assistant students, medical
students, and residents. Dr. Murphy is also a clinical instructor in orthopedics
at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
Robert A. Wainer, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon
Dr. Wainer graduated from the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in
1984 and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Wake Forest
University
Medical
Center in 1989. While at Wake
Forest
University he trained in
Sports Medicine under Dr. Walt Curl with the student athletes. Following
graduation he joined Dr. Dan Murphy in practice in Greensboro where they have a sports medicine
practice. Dr. Wainer is very involved in teaching, including physician assistant
students from Bowman Gray as well as family practice residents from the Moses H.
Cone Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Program. He is Assistant Professor in the
Orthopedic Department at Bowman Gray.
James S. Kramer, MD, CAQ Sports Medicine
Dr. Kramer graduated with honors from Wayne State University School of Medicine
in 1989 and the Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital Family Practice Residency
Program in 1992. He completed a primary care sports medicine fellowship at the Moses
H.
Cone Memorial
Hospital in 1993. He is in
private sports medicine practice while remaining a part-time residency faculty
member. Dr. Kramer serves as a team physician for James
B. Dudley
Senior High School, Greensboro College
(Director Student Health Services), Greensboro Monarchs, Greensboro Hornets and
as sports medicine consultant to several other area high schools. Dr. Kramer is
a charter member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and member
of the American College of Sports Medicine.
Ryan Draper, DO, CAQ Sports Medicine - Primary Care Sports Medicine Specialist
Dr. Draper graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in
2001. He completed his Family Medicine Residency at East Tennessee
State
University, where he served as chief resident. In
2005, he received a primary care sports medicine fellowship at the
Moses
H. Cone
Memorial
Hospital, and joined Murphy Wainer Orthopedics.
Since 2002, Dr. Draper has served as team physician for
Sullivan
High School football and
basketball games, and King’s College soccer and basketball games. He has also
done extensive volunteering, giving sports preparticipation exams, injury
clinics, and organizing group medical visits for patients with osteoarthritis.

Harold B. Kernodle, Jr, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon
Dr. Kernodle, Jr, received his medical degree from Duke
University and Orthopedic training at Vanderbilt University Medical
Center. He has special
interests in arthroscopic surgery, sports medicine and joint replacement and is
board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
James C. Califf, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon
Dr. Califf received his medical degree and Orthopedic training at Duke University.
Dr. Califf has a special interest and involvement in joint replacement, hand
surgery, sports medicine, back problems, and spine surgery. Dr. Califf is board
certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
James P. Hooten, Jr, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon
Dr. Hooten received his medical degree from the
University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and
Orthopedic training at Tulane
University. Dr. Hooten has
a special interest and training in joint replacement and has completed a
fellowship specializing in total joint replacement. Dr. Hooten is board
certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Kenneth Barnes, MD, CAQ Sports Medicine - Primary Care Sports Medicine
Specialist
Dr. Barnes received his MD from University
College in Dublin, Ireland.
He completed a residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at
Geisinger Medical Center
in Pennsylvania
and a fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine here at Moses Cone. Dr. Barnes
has worked with Elon University Athletics programs and is the University’s
Sports Medicine Director. He also practices at the Kernodle Orthopedic Clinic.
Dr. Barnes is a member of the American Society of Sports Medicine, the American College
of Sports Medicine, and the North Carolina Medical Society.

Peter G Daldorf, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon
Dr. Daldorf received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University
in 1983. He received his medical degree from the
University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School
of Medicine and completed his residency at the University of Rochester.
He was a fellow in Sports Medicine at Baylor University
and is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Daldorf
was team physician for the Houston Oilers in 1993-94 and currently serves as
team physician for North Carolina
A&T
University.
John Graves, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon
Dr. Graves earned his undergraduate degree from Washington
and Lee
University
and received his medical degree from the University
of Virginia in Charlottesville, where he also completed his
Orthopedic Surgery Residency. He completed a General Surgery Internship at the Naval Hospital
in San Diego, California and served as General Medical
Officer for a Marine Corps Infantry Battalion during Desert Storm. Dr. Graves
retired from the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander in 1997. He is a member of the
American Academy
of Orthopedic Surgery and
is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Dominic McKinley, MD, CAQ Sports Medicine - Primary Care Sports Medicine
Specialist
Dr. McKinley received his MD from Wright State University
in Ohio. He
completed a residency in Family Medicine and a fellowship in Primary Care Sports
Medicine here at Moses Cone. Dr. McKinley has worked with Guilford College
Athletics programs as well as with multiple area high schools. He is a member of
the Christian Medical Association, the American
College of Sports Medicine, the North
Carolina Medical Society, and the
American
Academy of Family
Physicians.
