4th Year Medical Student Rotations

We offer an inpatient Family Medicine Acting Internship as well as a number of family medicine outpatient selectives including sports medicine, OB, palliative care and an outpatient family medicine rotation. The palliative care rotation is offered to interested students in the second half of their 3rd year or in the 4th year, the other rotations are offered only to 4th year students. International students in their 4th year of medical school, planning a career in family medicine and applying to our residency program will be considered for rotations if space is available.

We are also happy to arrange shorter rotations or a second look to medical students applying to our residency program.

AHEC 436 - Acting Internship in Inpatient Family Medicine, Moses Cone Hospital:

Description: Students serve as acting interns and members of the patient care team. They round on all inpatients, take primary responsibility of assigned patients, actively participate in teaching rounds, attend scheduled conferences and take night call (usually every 4th night). Inpatients for this service are generated from the residency's Family Practice Center, from selected private practices, and from unassigned ER patients. Because of the ambulatory primary care patient base, students receive excellent exposure to the common medical problems requiring hospitalization in family medicine.

ACSM 401 18 - Sports Medicine in Family Medicine - Greensboro AHEC:

Learning Objectives: At end of course students will be able to:

1. Perform advanced exam of major joints injured in sports activities.

2. Give differential diagnosis of injuries to major joints.

3. Perform common sports medicine procedures such as ETT, splinting and or casting; joint injection, and orthotic preparation

4. Assess injured athletes at sporting event

Learning Activities: The course should appeal to any student interested in family medicine who is contemplating pursuit of a sports medicine fellowship. The student follows the schedule of 1 of our 3 sports medicine fellows. They participate in training room evaluations, primary care sports medicine clinics, orthopedic clinics, student health sports medicine clinic, weekly seminar and game coverage.

ACSM 401 54 - Obstetrics in Family Medicine - Greensboro AHEC:

Learning Objectives: At the end of the course students will be able to:

1. Perform advanced examination for common outpatient medical problems.

2. Evaluate the patient in labor and care for postpartum and antenatal patients

3. Demonstrate increased proficiency in the management and delivery of uncomplicated obstetric patients

4. Demonstrate increased proficiency in perineal repair and operative delivery techniques.

5. Interpret fetal monitoring strips

6. Demonstrate the basic concepts of prenatal care and contraceptive options for women

Learning Activities: The course should appeal to any student interested in family medicine who is contemplating pursuit of obstetrics in their practice or later completing a family medicine/obstetrics fellowship. The student is closely supervised by obstetric junior faculty (fellows). They participate in labor and delivery, obstetrics call, prepartum and postpartum rounds and obstetrics teaching conferences. This component comprises about 80% of the time. The second core component centers around work within the family medicine center. This includes walk-in clinics, prenatal clinics, and working directly in continuity clinics of residents and faculty. This comprises 20% of student time.

ACSM 401 61 Palliative Care - Greensboro:

Learning Objectives: At end of course students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate use of the interdisciplinary team approach

2. Assess and communicate prognosis

3. Appropriately manage physical symptoms

4. Demonstrate ability to respond appropriately to suffering

5. Recognize the symptoms of impending death

6. Describe the scope of Hospice and Palliative Care

7. Diagnose and manage the various cancer and non-cancer life-threatening diseases.

8. Understand the principles of pain management

9. Prescribe narcotic, non-narcotic and adjuvant pain medications

10. Discuss goals of care with patients and families using a patient-centered approach

11. Understand the physician's role in family meetings and end-of-life discussions

Learning Activities:

1. Take part in a multi-disciplinary team (nurse, nurse practitioner, social worker, chaplain, physician) planning sessions

2. See patients with the Palliative care consult service

3. Develop treatment plans with the palliative care consult service

4. See patients on the inpatient Hospice and Palliative Care Unit at MCHS and at Beacon Place, the residential hospice facility

5. Participate in goals of care meetings

6. Participate in family meetings

7. Review resources for pain and other symptom management

Family Medicine Outpatient Selective:

Description: Medical students will evaluate and treat ambulatory patients in the Moses Cone Family Practice Center under attending and resident supervision. The elective will provide exposure to acute and chronic medical problems and primary care procedures. Students will participate in continuity primary care clinics and specialty clinics including pulmonology, women’s health, geriatrics, nutrition, smoking cessation and pharmacy clinic.
