Health care professionals are well aware that the ethnic and cultural makeup of our state is changing rapidly:
Providing culturally and linguistically competent care for these individuals has become an important concern for us all.
Spanish Language Education:
The Greensboro AHEC has worked with the North Carolina AHEC Program to provide training to health care professionals in the Spanish language and in understanding the cultural issues our immigrant population brings to health care.
Each Spring, we offer the 10-week introductory Spanish language course, Communicating with Your Spanish-Speaking Client: Hablar El Idioma De Su Cliente.
Working with area agencies, we have also provided specific Spanish language training to assist mental health and substance abuse professionals.

Interpreter Training: The dramatic increase in the number of our non-English-speaking population has created a critical need for professional interpreters. Both Title VI of the Civil Rights Act and good medical care demand the use of competent interpreters rather than untrained friends or family. |
|
Greensboro AHEC collaborates with the NC AHEC Centers to provide training for interpreters in health and human services settings:
The North Carolina AHEC program maintains the website, North Carolina Latino Health Resource Center, at www.ncimmigranthealth.org. Language courses and Interpreter Training schedules at the regional AHECs are listed many online resources that will assist the health care provider to meet the needs of our Spanish-speaking population more effectively.
